Sam Muchiri, A.R.N.P., joined Orthopedic Surgeons, Inc., as a nurse practitioner in January 2020. Most recently, he worked as a nurse practitioner in Independence, Mo., where he managed the care of patients undergoing rehabilitation in various post-acute rehabilitation facilities. Sam also cared for post-operative orthopedic patients at North Kansas City Hospital for more than seven years.
One of Sam’s most memorable moments as a nurse came early in his career as he was caring for a patient who had had a knee replacement the previous day.
Early the next morning, he recalls going through instructions with the patient about what to expect for the day. Sam remembers going to the patient’s room soon after breakfast to help him get ready for physical therapy. After giving him his pain medication and getting him dressed, he helped the patient to the side of the bed. He remembers watching the patient pull himself up slowly, leaning on his walker and looking at his feet.
The patient took one step and grunted. Then he took a few more steps, still looking at his feet. Sam had to remind him to look up and stand up straight. By that time, the patient was standing near the mirror over the sink and stopped to look at his reflection.
He paused for a second, then broke down crying. Concerned, Sam asked why he was crying? The patient paused and looked at Sam with tears in his eyes and said, “Sam, this is the first time I’ve stood up in two years.” Sam was dumbfounded. He knew from that moment on his heart was in the right place. To that patient a knee replacement wasn’t just a pain reliever, it was a second chance to walk again.
Sam graduated in December 2015 with a master of science in nursing/adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner from Maryville University, St. Louis, Mo. He earned his bachelor of science in nursing in December 2011 from the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg, Mo. In 2007, he received a bachelor of science in journalism with a minor in interactive digital media from Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Mo.
